A magnitude 6.0 earthquake has hit Bali just minutes ago. I am in the north of Bali and felt a slight tremor.
Still not sure if there has been any damage caused.
Update: The recorded magnitude was 5.8 and occurred 110 km SSE of Bali.
Update #2: Around seven people were injured in the quake.

Indonesian police have confirmed they have shot dead Noordin Muhammed Top, who has been called the mastermind of the Bali Bombings and the recent Jakarta bombings.
He was found in the town of Solo in central Java.
From the Associated Press website:
“The most dangerous terrorist in Southeast Asia has been put out of commission,” said Jim Della-Giacoma, Southeast Asia project director for the International Crisis Group think tank.
“It would have been better if police had managed to arrest him alive, but it appears that this was not an option,” he said. “Unfortunately, Noordin’s death does not mean an end to terrorism in Indonesia, though it has been dealt a significant blow.”
Idul Fitri is the Islamic holiday that marks the end of the month long fasting of Ramadan. Many Indonesians from Java will return home for the holiday and a large number of domestic tourists will visit Bali for the holiday.
Police will be monitoring the massive movement of people leaving and entering Bali through the port of Gilmanuk where ferries connect Bali with Java. Not only will there be a high chance of traffic accidents, police fear terrorists might target the holiday period to enter the island of Bali.
Generally a good time to avoid travel if possible and many government offices, including immigration, are closed during the period.

Menjelang lebaran arus mudik meningkat beberapa persen.
Living in Bali, you see many things that you wouldn’t normally see, living in Australia, Europe or America. One thing which was a bit of a mystery to me was seeing people cutting down banana trees and then trying to lug the trunks around, usually on the back of a motorbike.
It’s also amazing seeing 70 year old, tiny Balinese women cutting down these trees and then carrying them around. I have seen people chewing on sticks of sugar cane around Asia, but the trees didn’t look too tasty. I thought that maybe they were used in some kind of Hindu religious ceremony, as Balinese often use bits of bamboo and other vegetation to decorate their temples.
I noticed that our neighbor had one cut up, so I couldn’t help asking what they were using them for. What they do is cut and mash up the trunk, mix it with rice and use it for feed to their pigs. So there you have it. Mystery solved.
The Calgary Herald reports that the managing editor of the Bali Times newspaper William Furney, is in a legal battle with his ex-wife Sara Oxley, over the custody of their children. Indonesian immigration will only issue exit permits with the children’s original Irish passports, which Furney is holding. Furney is from Ireland and his ex-wife is from England.
“There has not yet been a final outcome of the proceedings here and therefore Sara is wrong to try to take the children away and to refuse me access to them.
“If she did manage to return to England with my children, I am ready to take action to have the High Court order enforced – and that means an immediate return of the children to Bali,” Furney was reported as saying in the Eastbourne Herald.
We tried signing up with Speedy internet at our house in Lovina, but there’s no telephone available. I tried the 3G service here and it was extremely slow.
Our last option was to use Spicelink. They attached an antennae to our roof to get the internet and I pay around US$100 for the service. The service is ok, but not great. It seems at least once a week there is some kind of trouble. I understand that telecommunication infrastructure is not great here, but it is very frustrating.
Today, the internet is working fine, but for some reason Google is not work working. It’s amazing how reliant I have become on Google search, Gmail, Analysitcs and Adsense. When I called their customer support, they tried to tell me it was a problem with Google itself! I know Gmail sometimes have some outages, but I don’t I can recall the Google home page to have ever been down. They then said it was a problem with their proxy server.
It would make feel so much better if they just told me that from the start.
