Day of the Iron Fence – Pagerwesi

Posted by on Tuesday, 4 August, 2009

There always seems to some kind of ceremony taking place in Bali. Tomorrow is Pagerwesi Day which literally means “Iron Fence” and “one should surround oneself with a strong fortification against the forces of evil,” according to this site I found on Pagerwesi Day.

Our neighbor brought in some bananas and other tasty delicacies. I don’t think I have ever had neighbors so nice. Their houses are pretty simple, with just a simple living room and bedrooms. They do their cooking outside and it seems like they spend most of the day outside – sweeping up the leaves, watering their gardens, washing clothes and just generally hanging out on the bales (gazebo). At least it is mostly the guys hanging out and the women doing all of the chores.

doa hindu
